Peggy Cyphers (b.1954 Baltimore,MD) received an MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute and a BFA in Painting from Towson University, Baltimore, MD.
Animal Spirits is a series of abstract paintings which reflect on mental and physical spaces of weightlessness and expansive consciousness. The images focus on predatory birds and wild animals for inspiration - their colors, patterns, and a sense of gravitational, emotional and mental freedom.
Peggy Cyphers’ work reflects her interest in the theories of Charles Darwin, specifically the interconnectedness of all living species. He was one of the earliest proponents of animal rights and did studies of emotions in animals, which led to the founding of the Anti-vivisection Society in England.
Cyphers’ paintings use abstract characters that weave into vibratory spaces which calm sensory perception. The process is an automatic writing streaming between cultural, geological and primordial time, with roots in Eastern, Native American and Modernist traditions.
Cyphers has had one person exhibitions nationally and internationally since her first show in the East Village in 1984. Her exhibitions have been reviewed in the New York Times, New York Observer, Art in America and San Francisco Chronicle, Brooklyn Rail, among others.
