Juul Hondius (b.1970 in Ens, Noordoostpolder, The Netherlands) lives and works in Amsterdam. Hondius creates carefully staged images that draw on the iconography of news photography only to displace its proverbial codes. His images suggest migration and transit, solitude and displacement. Unsettlingly familiar, his subjects are often people ridding on public transportation or driving their car, seemingly oblivious to the artist’s presence. And yet, the photographs' glossy finish constantly calls into questions the authenticity of the encounter or situation, casting doubt on any intuitive sense of recognition.
Juul Hondius has presented solo shows at Galerie Akinci (2004 and 2007) and has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including “Becoming Istanbul” at Deutches Architektur Institut / Garanti Gallery, Frankfurt (2008), “The Photographers” at Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center, Istanbul (2007), “Paranoia” at the Freud Museum, London (2007) and Leeds City Gallery, Leeds (2006), “In Sight: Contemporary Dutch Photography” at The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, (2005), “Harmless” at De Appel Foundation, Amsterdam, (2004), “Delay” at Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam, (2004) and the Busan Biennale, Busan Metropolitan Art Museum, Busan, Korea, (2004).
