Masakatsu Kondo (b. 1962 Nagoya, Japan) lives and works in London. He graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art, and lives and works in London. Kondo’s work is often a composition of impossible landscapes as artificial. Though ‘recognisably an interpretation of our own, is subtly but demonstrably out of step with observable reality.’ His work exposes the contemporary conflict to establish true authenticity in a world in which digital reproduction and enhancement are the everyday. Pitting the sublime against the mundane, Kondo constructs subtly enhanced and engineered scenery suggestive of a peculiarly modern.  As a consequence, his paintings seem to exist ‘in a hinterland between the natural and the artificial, the representational and the abstract, the broadly traditional and the utterly contemporary’.

Masakatsu Kondo won the 2nd Prize of John Moores Exhibition at Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool (1997) and Granada Foundation Prize at Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester (1993). Selected solo exhibitions include; Botany (2003) and Bridge (2007) at David Risley Gallery, London, Masakatsu Kondo at Mid Pennine Gallery, Burnley (2002), Landsacpe Paintings 1997 -2001 at Turnpike Gallery (2001), New Paintings at Taro Nasu Gallery, Tokyo (2001). Whenever I Am Silent at All Visual Arts, London (2012).  Selected group show; On the Threshold II (The Oriental Museum, Durham University, Durham) (2016), As Others See Us (The Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, Ayr) (2014), Prime at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, Tokyo (2000), New space at Oriel Mostyn, North Wales (2001), Surface at Nederlands Foto Instituut, Rotterdam (2001), and Nature in the Dream at Gunma Museum of Art, Tatebayashi (2006).
