What kind of collector are you? Do you consider long and hard before purchasing a piece or do you buy on impulse? Does your collection have a particular historic or geographic focus or does it follow the whims of your personal taste? Are you a risk-taker who likes to invest in artists early in their careers, or do you only buy works by established, proven artists? Zipora Fried, born in 1964 in Haifa, Israel, currently lives and works in New York. She graduated from the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria. Her drawings, sculptures and photographic practice are an exercise in dichotomy– silent confrontation, restrained rawness and persistent fragility. She takes elements of biography, familiar or ordinary objects, and mimics and dislocates the everyday.
Her work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions internationally, including Total Recall organized by Public Art Fund, New York (2010); Zipora Fried & Margarete Jakschik & Sam Windett at Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis, MO (2010); Greater New York at MoMA PS1, New York (2010); Minus Space at MoMA PS1, New York (2008) and Drawing a Line in the Sand at Peter Blum Gallery, New York (2012); Creative Migration, Austrian Cultural Forum, New York, NY (2009); Escape from NY, Project Space/Spare Room, Melbourne, Australia (2009); Minus Space, MoMA PS1, Queens, New York (2008); Zeitraumzeit, Künstlerhaus Museum, Vienna, Austria (2008); A/R Contemporary, Milan, Italy (2008); Do You Want a Piece of Me? Bespoke Gallery, New York, NY (2007); Escape from NY, SNO Gallery, Sydney, Australia (2007); The North Dakota Museum of Art, North Dakota (2006).
Fried is also the recipient of numerous awards for her experimental films, which have been featured in festivals worldwide. Awards include Best Short Film Award at The Malaga International Film Festival, the bronze award at the International Short Film Festival in Kraków, Poland, as well as numerous other international film festivals ranging in location from the United States to Hong Kong.
