MA Han (b.1968, Hunan, China) graduated from the Department of Oil painting of the China National Academy of Fine Arts, Hangzhou, 1994.

He lives and works in Beijing.

Since 2000, Ma Han has been concerned about white-collars, black collars, and pink-collars. He uses shirt colors as a metaphor for social class. The white shirts first appeared in the "Long March: A Walking Visual Display" exhibition in 2002, before entering Tokyo Gallery, Beijing 798 Art District's first show, Western Academy of Beijing, 2009 Hong Kong International Art Fair and Guangzhou Opera House.

Floating collar is not difficult to cause people to feel like a shell, small white-collars and other images. The pink-collar reflects the emergence of a more ambiguous class, one that is highly educated, financially independent, seeks personal values, with a consumer passion, courage, self-confidence and a calm, modern man. The artist observes this amongst the emerging populations of the major cities, a pink shirt is hung up, representing people's desire to succeed, eager fashion sense, remain youthful, unwillingness to be outdated, unbroken hopes and desires, pink collar - beautiful and stunning.

Ma Han has witnessed the urban expansion and demolition of Beijing’s ancient city hutongs, city walls and 20th Century edifices. Since 2009, he has made dust and debris from razed architectural structures the subject of his studies. In “Every Crush Isn’t the Same”, he intends to bring about a rebirth of culture from the rubble.

All of the materials in his collection of over 20 types of demolition materials include marble, stone, cement, red and gray brick, river rock, glass and ceramics have been manually transformed into a uniform shape and size, and by reusing the materials in a new light with a new perspective, he has created a diary of mourning for this city.

Through his art, Ma Han wishes to make a connection between the demolished and the newly built, reminding us of the generational cycle of birth to destruction to rebirth.
