Vikenti Komitski, born in 1983 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Komitski employs the logic of the readymade and intervenes by
performing minimal artistic transformations. His choice of original
objects to work from is often fairly mundane, but he brings to each
a sudden new dynamic and hence enlivens their original form to
change their situation and context and hence the viewer's
anticipated perception. As Komitski plays and opens up the
definition of everyday objects he also unites them in a collaged,
interrelated sphere where they take on a utopian-style of equality.
For example in Untitled, 2009 he presents 21 different
ways to interpret one and the same image (a small black circle), it
could be a football at the bottom of a well, the barrel of a gun or
any of 19 other proposals. In other drawings he uses pages form old
manuals or world maps, which he covers with black paint or
decorative elements, leaving visible only the smallest details. In
the composite works in the series 'Frame' he substituted the space
of the canvas inside the frame with paving-stones, thus subtly
posing the question of the status of art to and within the art
institution.
Komitski graduated in Sculpture from the National Academy of
Art, Sofia. In 2009 his solo exhibition #1 was presented
at Vaska Emanuilova Gallery and curated by Vladiya Mihailova. Also
in 2009 he presented work in the exhibitons Work in Motion
at the Red House, Sofia and in The Temptation of Chalga,
at the Sofia City Art Gallery. Komitski was a nominee for the BAZA
Award, Sofia City Art Gallery in 2008 and 2009.
