Ed Gomez received an MFA from Otis College of Art and Design in 2003, and a BFA from Arizona State University in 1999. Selected exhibitions include esta loco, pero no es pendejo at Raid Projects in Los Angeles (2008); AMERICANista at LA Artcore, Brewert Annex in Los Angeles (2008); LATITUDE at LA Artcore in Los Angeles (2008); ah-peh-JEE-doh at the Center for the Arts in Eagle Rock, California (2007); Strata at Sotheby's Gallery in Beverly Hills, California, and Seven-Degrees Gallery in Laguna Beach, California (2007); Real, Imagined at Sixteen to One Gallery in Santa Monica, California (2007); and MexiCali Biennial 2006.
Gomez deftly weaves his way from realism to abstract expressionism through his body of paintings. His approach is not to deconstruct the realized image, or to flirt with hyper-representation, but is instead a play on art historical practices, citing movements as benchmarks for moments in critical theory. Aptly, his work is self-conscious of its own place in contemporary art making, and is married to the idea of form as a function and product of its own setting.
Ed Gomez lives and works in Los Angeles.
