Michael Kunze (b. 1961 Munich, Germany) studied Philosophy at the Ludwig-Maximilian-University and painting at the Academy of Arts in Munich. He has shown internationally since 1989 and currently lives and works in Berlin. He is represented by COMA, Berlin, Nicolas Krupp, Basel, and Thomas Rehbein, Cologne.
The work of Michael Kunze has been referred to as a transposition of classical education into painting. He practices hermetics and devotes himself to possibly fruitless and incomprehensible scholarship. He travels between worlds and through history. A key role in Michael Kunze's work is played by the 60 odd canvases called 'Les Messieurs d'Avignon'. They are portraits of well-known personalities of art and philosophy from the end of the 19th to the end of the 20th century. They are what the artist refers to as bad boys of modernity from Friedrich Nietsche to Michel Houellebecq. Each stands for alternative ideas for a model of an ever progressing modernity. A slight tendency towards melancholy appears in them - as in his older landscapes and architectures - a kind of timeless shadow-side of Modernity which at the same time is a lower stratum crucial to understanding this modernity.
