BIOGRAPHY

London-based artists Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard (b. 1973 in Manchester – b. 1972 in Newcastle) have been producing work collaboratively since 1995. Forsyth and Pollard use a variety of media, including video and live performance. Their practice explores the legacy of cultural forms and events. It addresses the ways in which the latter are absorbed and re-produced over time, playing off of viewers’ expectations, sense of recognition and affective involvement. “A Rock 'N' Roll Suicide” (1998) meticulously recreated David Bowie's legendary 'farewell' performance as Ziggy Stardust, 25 years after the original event. Forsyth and Pollard also engage with the multi-layered implications of re-enactment through their appropriation of historical artworks. Realized in collaboration with MC Plan B, their video “Walking After Acconci (Redirected Approaches)” (2005) re-stages a performance by Vito Acconci from 1973. The differences between both pieces, made especially poignant by the young MC’s R&B-inspired monologue, highlight the varying historical context and cultural reality that surrounded each performance.

Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard have recently presented solo projects and exhibitions at AV Festival, Middlesbrough Town Hall, Middlesbrough (2010), Broadway, Nottingham (2009), BFI Gallery, London (2009), Void Gallery, Derry (2009), Site Gallery, Sheffield (2009), Kate MacGarry, London (2008), Baltic, Gateshead (2008) and the Musee d’art moderne Grand-Duc Jean, Luxembourg (2008). Their work has also been shown as part of “Desiring Necessities” at the John Hansard Gallery, Southampton (2009), “Harry Smith Anthology Remixed” at CCA - Centre for Contemporary Art, Glasgow (2008), “History Will Repeat Itself” at Kunst-Werke Berlin e.V. - KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2007), “Depiction perversion repulsion obesession subversion” at Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam (2007) and “Neo-con. Contemporary Returns to Conceptual Art” at Apexart, New York (2006).
