BIOGRAPHY

Salla Tykkä was born in 1973 in Helsinki, Finland, where she continues to live and work. Tykkä primarily uses photography and moving image. Her practice engages with power relations, gender antagonisms, voyeurism, (sexual) identity, obsession and perfection. Often revolving around the inner tensions of a central female protagonist, Tykkä’s films and photographic series evolve complex psychological narratives built up through the use of dramatic jump cuts, and set to the appropriated soundtrack of famous film scores. While exploring cinematic structures and the seamlessness of common editing techniques, Tykkä creates rich images that appear at once deeply personal and strangely generic, suspended between singular memory and cliché.

Salla Tykkä has recently presented solo exhibitions at Norrköpings Artmuseum, Norrköping, Sweden (2009), Solar Art Gallery, Vila Do Conde, Portugal (2009), 300m3 Art Space Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden (2008), Wellington City Gallery, Wellington (2007), Helsinki City Art Museum, Kluuvi Gallery, Helsinki (2007), the Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts, Dublin (2007), Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Dunedin, New Zealand (2007) and Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm (2007). Her work has also been shown in numerous museums and international exhibitions, including the 17th Biennale of Sydney, Museum of Contemorary Art, Sydney (2010), “Momentum 2009”, the 5th Nordic Biennial of Contemporary Art, Moss (2009), “Arctic Hysteria: New Art from Finland” at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York and touring to Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art, Budapest and Taidehalli, Kunsthalle Helsinki, Helsinki (2008-2009), “The Squared Circle” at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2003) as well as the 49th International Biennale di Venezia, Venice (2001).
