Massimo Bartolini was born in 1962 in Cecina, Italy, where he continues to live and work. Using various materials and techniques, including sculpture, performance and photography, Bartolini creates evocative spaces and anti-monumental sculptures. These meditative works allow for spatio-temporal encounters, which are more attuned to individual biometric rhythms than to socially conditioned responses. Bartolini’s atmospheric installations often elicit physical reactions that evolve a bodily awareness, stimulating viewers’ imaginative capacity rather than commanding their active participation. Bartolini believes that “art speaks privately to the public: the perfect opposite, that is, of what various disciplines (certainly cinema, certainly TV) do, speaking publicly to the private individual.”
Massimo Bartolini has recently presented solo exhibitions at Magazzino d’ arte Moderna, Rome (2009), Massimo De Carlo, Milan (2008), Frith Street Gallery, London (2008), MAXXI – Museo delle Arti del XXI Secolo, Rome (2008), IKON Gallery, Birmingham, UK (2007) and GAM - Galleria Civica d'Arte moderna e Contemporanea, Turin (2005) in Italy. His work has also been shown as part of the Nordic & Danish Pavillion at the 53rd Venice Biennale, Venice (2009), the XV Quadriennale di Roma, Palazzo delle Esposizioni di Rome (2008), “Mediterranee”, Carre d'Art at the Musee d'Art Contemporain de Nimes, Nimes (2007), “Resonance” at Frith Street Gallery, London (2006), the 2006 Shanghai Biennale, Art 37 Basel, Art in Public Space, Basel (2006) and Manifesta 4, Frankfurt (2002).
Massimo Bartolini is represented by Frith Street Gallery, London, and Gallery Massimo de Carlo, Milan.
