Luke Fowler was born in 1978 in Glasgow, Scotland, where he continues to live and work. Fowler is an artist filmmaker and a musician. He is a member of the bands Rude Pravo and Lied Music, and also runs SHADAZZ, a multimedia platform for creative collaborations. Fowler’s meticulously researched portraits of vanguard thinkers and counter-cultural figures often explore the limits of documentary filmmaking, innovatively combining new and archival footage, interviews and photography with a densely layered soundtrack. His project “Pilgrimage from Scattered Points” (2006) revolved around English composer Cornelius Cardew, responsible for the collaborative musical ensemble the Scratch Orchestra. Active from 1968 to 1973, this utopian endeavor gradually fell apart, unable to reconcile the schism between individual artistic expression and the group’s democratic mission to bring music to the masses.
Luke Fowler has recently presented solo exhibitions at The Modern Institute/Toby Webster Ltd, Glasgow (2009), The Serpentine Gallery, London (2009), CAC Bretigny, France (2009), X Initiative, New York (2009), Kunsthaus Zürich, Zürich (2008). His work has also been shown as part of “'Younger than Jesus” at New Museum, New York (2009), “Time Crevasse”, the 3rd Yokohama Triennale (2008), the “EAST International” at Norwich Gallery, Norwich (2007), Prague Biennale 3 (2007), the 3rd Tate Triennial, Tate Britain, London (2006) and Manifesta 4, Frankfurt (2002). He has received the 1st Jarman Award for Artist-Filmmakers at Serpentine Gallery, London (2008) and was short-listed for the Beck’s Futures award, presented at the ICA – Institute for Contemporary Art, London (2005).
Luke Fowler is represented by The Modern Institute, Glasgow.
