Born in 1979 in Dumfries, Scotland, Duncan Marquiss lives and works in London. Duncan Marquiss works predominantly with drawing and film. His early work featured ambiguous drawings of found images, and videos of deserted landscapes accompanied by minimal music. Many of Marquiss’s recent works are formal experiments, including abstract drawings based on rubbings of studio detritus, and flicker films that play with visual perception.
“The world we see is not the world as it is. Another meaning always exists. Everything threatens to turn into something else, to acquire significance or lose it. The space of representation is not some virtual space behind the projection screen, or caught somehow between the line drawn on a sheet of paper and the vanishing point projected a few feet to one side. It is constructed and exists in our minds. Marquiss's work investigates this dissociation between image and effect, the power of an imaginative connection to affect or alter the nature of the experience that follows, to change or construct the fabric of history or social reality as a result of the unpredictable processes of human consciousness. “ (Will Bradley, 2007.)
He undertook the LUX Associate Artist Programme, London in 2009. He was the recipient of the Margaret Tait Award 2015-16. Recent exhibitions and screenings include Experimenta, BFI London Film Festival; International Motley Honest Signals, Glasgow Project Room; Index, screening at Microscope Gallery, New York; Foraging Economics, essay for The Happy Hypocrite, 2014; and Information Foraging, Artist Moving Image Festival Tramway, Glasgow 2013.
