簡介
Los Angeles-based artist Ry Rocklen uses familiar found objects, turning things such as cushions, clothing, furniture, and wheels into elegant, though-provoking sculptures. Rocklen collects eclectic detritus of contemporary American life to make poetic artworks that are often both funny and touching, combining a critique of mainstream culture and the American Dream with sophisticated techniques and formal qualities. For a recent body of work, he cast his entire wardrobe in porcelain and presented the resulting sculptures as bas relief wall hangings. Other recent works include Untitled Hummer Flat (2014), Rocklen’s bronze cast of a flat Hummer tire and Bar Mitzvah (2014), his replica of the mens’ bathroom door at the Los Angeles bar The Mandrake that features all of the door’s graffiti filled in with gold leaf. These sculptures suggest an alchemical approach to art-making that emphasizes the potential of creative gestures to transform objects with specific personal and cultural meaning into universal totems.

Ry Rocklen was born in Los Angeles in 1978 and lives in Los Angeles. Rocklen received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2001 and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles in 2006.
