Born in 1976 in Chester, United Kingdom, Ryan Gander lives and works in London. Gander uses a range of media including installation, video, advertisement, sound and literature to provoke a dialogue between the familiar and the unfamiliar. His practice weaves countless layers of fictional accounts together with documentary records. Gander continuously reconfigures existing aesthetic conventions by restructuring their defining parameters, all the while reinventing his own practice in the process. His installation “Is this guilt in you too— (Cinema Verso)†(2006) reverses the conventional viewing situation of the cinema theatre. Visitors fumble through the dark into a decrepit room behind a glass cinema screen only to peer through the blurry movie projection at the theatre’s empty rows of seats. Gander describes his own practice as being driven by the intent to create something completely new and unexpected every time he tackles a project, willfully producing pieces that appear ill-fitting in relation to the body of work that came before. Gander is also known for having run the non-profit space Associates (2007) for one year, giving twelve emerging artists the opportunity to present their first solo exhibition in London.
Ryan Gander has recently presented solo exhibitions and projects at‘Heterotopias’, Musee d’Art Modern at Contemporain and Aubette 1928, Strasbourg, France (2016),‘I See Straight Through You’, Lisson Gallery, New York, USA (2016), Taro Nasu Gallery, Tokyo (2010), Lisson Gallery, London (2010), Khastoo Gallery, Los Angeles (2010), Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam (2009), Annet Gelink Gallery, Amsterdam (2009), gb Agency/Kadist Foundation, Paris (2009) and Frieze Project, Frieze Art Fair, London (2009). His work has been shown in numerous museums and international exhibition, including “Life on Marsâ€, the 55th Carnegie International, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh (2008).
Ryan Gander is represented by Lisson Gallery, London, GB Agency, Paris and Taro Nasu, Tokyo.
