Jamie Shovlin (b. 1978 in Leicester, United Kingdom) lives and works in London. Shovlin’s pieces are fabricated compendiums at once irresistibly credible and inherently flawed. His works are the product of extensive research and meticulous construction. They often take the form of fictional archives, which appear to expose peculiar narratives unearthed and brought to light through the artist’s careful investigations. These complex pieces are constructed from the overlapping perspectives of various characters, braking up authorial vision through multiple voices. Shovlin’s works play upon the fine line that separates truth from fiction, laying out a critical mass of personal stories and pseudo-historical facts as a constellation of coordinates that support the projects’ overall credibility. But by including subtle and often personal clues, such as anagrams of his own name, Shovlin allows viewers to progressively uncover his works’ fabricated nature, leading them to question their own preconceptions when faced with the unraveling of such elegantly staged constructs.
Jamie Shovlin has recently presented solo exhibitions at AND Festival, Various venues Manchester (2010), Horton Gallery, New York (2010), Conduits, Milan (2010), Grand Union, Birmingham (2010), Fishmarket Gallery, Northampton (2010), Outpost, Norwich (2009) and Haunch of Venison, Zurich (2009). His work has also been shown as part of “Distortion” as part of the 53rd Venice Biennale, Venice (2009), “Desiring Necessities” at the John Hansard Gallery, Southampton (2009), “I desired what you were, I need what you are” at Maze Gallery, Turin (2008), “Bird Watching” de Vishal – ruimte voor beeldende kunst, Haarlem (2007), “Black & White” at IBID Projects London and “Elephant Cemetary” at Artists Space, New York (2007). He was nominated for the Beck’s Futures prize in 2006 presented at ICA – Institute of Contemporary Arts, London.
