BIOGRAPHY

Erik Benson (b. 1973 Detroit) received a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1996 and an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island, and attended The Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture in 2001. He was a NYFA Painting fellow in 2008. Erik Benson lives and works in Brooklyn.

Erik Benson’s paintings are informed by architecture and landscape found in the everyday. He builds paintings using a cut and paste collage method. Paint is poured onto a glass table. It dries and is cut into shapes, and collaged to create the forms and structures of space and architecture in the work. Through using this process, Benson explores the mimetic relationship between the architectural subjects in the paintings and the process in which they are produced.
