BIOGRAPHY

Michael Bilsborough lives and works in Manhattan. His work has been featured at The Indianapolis Museum, Invisible-Exports, Deitch Projects, Paul Kasmin, The Project, Derek Eller, P.P.O.W., and many other galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Berlin and Miami. He completed the Workspace Residency of Lower Manhattan Cultural Council in 2006-7 and won the Visual Arts Grant from the Rema Hort Mann Foundation in 2006. He grew up in the California desert, studied philosophy at Columbia University, and earned an MFA at the School of Visual Arts, for which he now maintains the School of Visual Arts CE Blog.

In his drawings, Michael Bilsborough simulates movement and sensation through ambiguous narratives that toe the edges of plausibility. In his figures, there is a distinction between the character, which experiences pain and pleasure, and the body, which is a malleable machination of tissue and appendages. Bilsborough draws men and women from his imagination, often calculating their dimensions to conform to physiological specifics. Precisely crafted and often monumental, his integrated pictures of orgies and physical games are surgically fragmented by repetition and phasing, which subsume time and space to anticipation and periodicity. Whether his works depict a single narrator or a collection of characters, they survey sexuality and sensation, reporting back layered adventures that take no nerve for granted.
