BIOGRAPHY

Born in Barletta, Italy, lives and works in Berlin. “Rizzi’s practice is an act of mediation through which to present fundamental aspects of the lives of specific individuals or groups of people who have been compromised by the impact of the uprooting forces of neo-liberal globalisation. His works consider the notion of 'border', particularly in relation to issues of identity and presence, concentrating on collective memories and individual stories. Most specifically he is interested in those people who are in some way caught in a dialectic gap between places, sharing different cultures and values. Rizzi travels regularly, speeding long periods of time in the contexts he uses as a subject base, these residencies have included months spent in Istanbul to research and film 'Murat ve Ismail'(2005) and in 2007 time spent in Amman to film 'impermanent', an emotional interview with Ali Akilah.” (Vasif Kortun, 6th Taipei Biennial)

Rizzi’s recent exhibitions include: 'State of Transit', Open Space, Vienna, Austria (2012); 'Videoforma', National Center for Contemporary Arts, Saint Petersburg, Russia; 'Actually, that's not the case' (Shadow Theatre Performance), SALT BeyoÄŸlu, Istanbul, Turkey; '(Dis)assembled', Röda Sten, Göteborg, Sweden and 'Partial Truths', Podbielski Contemporary, Berlin, Germany (2011); 'La vie est à nous', Analix Forever, Geneva, Switzerland and International Istanbul Film Festival, Akbank Sanat, Istanbul, Turkey (2010); 'Heiss oder Kalt', Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, Germany and 'Rotte Metropolitane', Villa Romana, Florence, Italy (2009). In 2011 Rizzi's work was acquired by the Sharjah Art Foundation; in 2010 by the Fund for the 21st Century, Permanent Collection of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA. In 2005 Rizzi won the Best Artist Prize of the 7th Sharjah Biennial in the United Arab Emirates; in 2004 The Mulliqi Prize in Kosovo. In 2008 his work was selected in the Official Programme of the Berlin Film Festival. Rizzi participated in the 6th Taipei Biennial in Taiwan and the 13th Carrara International Biennial in Italy (2008), in the 4th Göteborg International Biennial in Sweden (2007), in the 47th October Salon in Serbia and in the 6th EV+A Biennial in Ireland (2006), in the 3rd Tirana Biennale in Albania and the 9th International Istanbul Biennial in Turkey (2005), in the 14th Sydney Biennale in Australia (2004).
