The subdued atmosphere of a collector’s house: a small Modernist sideboard with a figurine placed on it, archival material in vitrines, large-format photographs, slide and film projections onto white rectangles, on walls otherwise painted in saturated plain colours. The impression of a private home is, however, fractured by two rectangles – one sawn out of the floor to reveal an underlying wood structure, the other out of a wall that would normally hide the view out of a window onto a building opposite.

The Berlin-based artist Kathrin Sonntag (b. 1981) was commissioned to create one of twelve new productions for RAY 2015. Her site-specific installation “This Was Tomorrow Once” is one of the spaces of the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt, one of the three venues currently presenting the photography triennial’s central exhibition, titled IMAGINE REALITY (June 20– September 20 at Fotografie Forum Frankfurt, Museum Angewandte Kunst and MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main). For IMAGINE REALITY, twenty-eight artists use fragments of reality to create imaginary and visionary worlds. Their images lead into a world in which reality and fiction, facts and illusions are inseparably woven together. Kathrin Sonntag (b. 1981 Berlin, Germany) received a BA and an MA in visual arts from the Universität der Künste Berlin (2000–06). Sonntag distorts, refracts, and fragments quotidian objects in order to inspire her audience to untether their preconceived ways of looking and seeing. Her pictures regularly confound perception of illusionistic space and undermine assumptions about truth in photography. Encompassing sculpture, photography, film, and drawing, her work offers a complex analysis of the nature of objects and the division between fiction and reality.
In 2009, Sonntag was awarded the Dr. Georg and Josi Guggenheim Prize as well as the Swiss Art Award which she received a second time in 2013. Her work has been installed in solo presentations at a range of international institutions including Swiss Institute – Contemporary Art, New York (2009); Kunstverein in Hamburg (2011); Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (2013); and Aspen Art Museum, Colorado (2013). Her work has also been featured in multiple group exhibitions, including Leopards in the Temple, SculptureCenter, New York (2010); Moscow International Biennial for Young Art (2012); Made in Germany, Kunstverein Hannover (2012); At Work, Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen, Germany (2013); Pictures in Time, Haus der Kunst, Munich (2014); RAY Fotografie Projekte, Fotografie Forum Frankfurt (2015) and Photo-Poetics: An Anthology, Salomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2015).
