Born in 1969 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Alexandre da Cunha lives and works in London. Da Cunha recycles commonplace objects into graphic sculptures and two-dimensional works. His process is reminiscent of the ways in which developing countries repossess discarded objects, which are invested with renewed value in second-hand markets and street shops. Da Cunha has transformed cut plastic bottles into a glittering set of glassware, and rubber plungers into elegant terra cotta vases. For a recent series of wall pieces, he collaged brightly colored floor mops onto canvases to create constructivist-inspired works. Both humorous and witty, da Cunha’s pieces lend mundane objects a new sense of purpose while drawing attention to third world countries’ creative forms of economic exchange.
Alexandre da Cunha has recently presented solo exhibitions at Thomas Dane Gallery, London, England (2016), MCA Chicago Plaza Project, Chicago, Illinois (2015) Real, Galeria Luisa Strina, São Paulo, Brazil (2015), Contratempo, Sommer & Kohl, Berlin, Germany (2013), Camden Arts Centre, London (2009), Vilma Gold, London (2008), Galeria Luisa Strina, Sao Paulo (2008), Sommer & Kohl, Berlin (2008), and CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco (2007). His work has also been shown as part of “The Big Ripoff” at Camden Arts Centre, London (2010), the San Juan Trienial, San Juan (2009), “Around the World in Eighty Days,” at ICA/South London Gallery, London (2006), Prague Biennale 2, Prague (2005), “The Structure of Survival”, the 50th Venice Biennale (2003) and the Liverpool Biennial (2002).
