BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1973 in Penzance, Corwall, United Kingdom, Matt Stokes lives and works in Gateshead. Using a range of media including print, photography and film, Stokes investigates the fine line that delineates the sacred from the profane, devotion from fetishism, with the obsessive patience of an anthropologist. His works often take the form of sub-cultural archives that document unconventional music groups or movements by amassing collections of flyers, cassette tapes and other ephemera associated with underground gatherings and cult followings. Stokes’ 16mm film “Long After Tonight”, which won him the 2006 Beck's Futures prize, documents a gathering of Northern Soul fans from around the United Kingdom in St Salvador's church, Dundee.

Recent solo exhibitions and projects include “VIVID”, artist commission, Birmingham (2010), “These are the days” at Wilfried Lentz, Rotterdam (2010), “These are the days” at ZieherSmith, New York, “The Gainsborough Packet &c.” at 176, London (2009), “The Gainsborough Packet” at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead (2009), “these are the days” at Arthouse, Austin (2009). His work has also been shown as part of “Desiring Necessities” at the John Hansard Gallery, Southampton (2009), “The Weasel: Pop Music and Contemporary Art” at South London Gallery, London (2008), “Street: behind the cliché” at Witte de With, Rotterdam (2006), EAST International 06 at Norwich Gallery and NSAD, Norwich (2006), as well as “Romantic Detachment” at PS1 MOMA, New York, USA and Chapter Gallery, Cardiff (2004). He has been short-listed for the Northern Art Prize at the Leeds City Art Gallery, Leeds (2009) and has been awarded the Becks Futures prize at ICA, London (2006).

Matt Stokes is represented by Workplace Gallery, Gateshead and ZieherSmith, New York.
