Berlin is a city filled with interesting artists, and so the expectation is that Art Forum Berlin (the Art Fair) will be fresh, lively and interesting. With the art world it is impossible to please everyone. There was the positive feed back, "It was not the tired list of names that predominated at Frieze and Fiac". But perhaps for this reason there were people complaining, "It was provincial". Provincial or fresh- it was a place where one could make new discoveries and reaffirm old prejudices...

Rui Calçada Bastos uses unique perspective with his camera to share with the viewer objects and shapes that would perhaps be overlooked at first glance. His three-minute video “Ambitious,” is one example of his work that possesses elements typical of Bastos’s work. Throughout the film Bastos uses close-ups of specific characters to create unique personalities that allow for the viewer to create specific relationships to the different characters. The characters are together in the car, which adds another element of personality to the characters because the viewer is able to understand them in relation to each other. His other invested work, “Same Old Tune,” also uses movement in a way that provides the necessary tools to personalize the featured character. The record spins, but the man walking on it does not move anywhere. Bastos compares this movement to a characteristic of relationships when someone walks but the view never changes.
He is represented by Invaliden1 Galerie in Berlin and Vera Cortês Agência de Arte in Lisbon.
