KCC Gallery is pleased to announce Jaye Moon's solo exhibition "Web City" on June 19, 2015. Moon has been using Legos as art medium since 1996. Moon is fascinated with the idea that all types of blocks can fit into each other and grow endlessly like nature. She believes that even though nature seems very abstract and beyond our control, it is created by its own rules, like Legos, which function like molecules.
In order to create Lego installations for this exhibition, Moon first collected used Lego bricks from different people. Moon uses donated Legos to illustrate that all of these different Lego parts, whether old or new and wherever they come from, fit amazingly well together, harmonizing with each other like a universe. Once she forms the Lego installation, she invites people to participate by adding more bricks on her work. In the end, Moon’s work becomes different from her original piece, but still adheres to the same Lego rules. When collaborating, their individually chosen constructions create unexpected patterns. The result depends on who participates when, and Moon believes that this aspect resembles what our life is like, but everything happens based on mathematical order as well, producing endless patterns.
By applying Lego bricks to the actual architectural space, Moon tries to show that everything surrounding us is built in mathematical order. Moon also combines different kinds of materials with Legos, such as wire, tape, rulers, plants and paint, and experiment with theirs scales and textures relative to Legos. When collaborating, their individually chosen constructions create unexpected patterns. The result depends on who participates when, and I believe that this aspect resembles what our life is like, but everything happens based on mathematical order as well.
Toys are universal and innocent, and conjure the nostalgia of childhood memories, bringing everybody together regardless gender, race and age. In this exhibition, "Web City", Moon tries to express that, whether physical or cyber, we are all connected to each other through webs. Moon's work will continue to grow indefinitely as long as there is a Lego brick remaining on earth. This exhibition, "Web City" will continue until Aug 10
